8 Ways to Free Your Mind

In the following quote in Meditations, Marcus Aurelius describes four habits of the stoic mind:

“Our rational nature moves freely forward in its impressions when it:
1) accepts nothing false or uncertain;
2) directs its impulses only to act for the common good;
3) limits its desires and aversions only to what’s in its own power;
4) embraces everything nature assigns it.” -Marcus Aurelius

The third habit is especially important. One of the key principles of Stoicism, a philosophy espoused by Aurelius, is that we should focus on what we can control and let go of what we cannot control. Practicing this principle can help us to reduce stress, increase our sense of contentment, and improve our overall well-being. Here are a few common ways to practice this habit which Aurelius describes as “limiting our desires and aversions to what’s in our own power:”

  1. Identify what you can control: Make a list of things that you can control and things that you cannot control. Focus on the things that you can control, such as your thoughts, feelings, and actions.
  2. Practice mindfulness: Pay attention to the present moment and focus on what you are doing rather than dwelling on past events or worrying about the future.
  3. Practice gratitude: Expressing gratitude for what you have and the good things in your life can help you…
